Parallax (2024)

Instrumentation: 2 (II dbl. picc) 222 / 2221 / timp. perc(2) / str

Duration: 5 minutes

Program Notes: The word “parallax” refers to a scientific phenomenon where an object seems to move or transform when an observer changes vantage points. “Parallax” is also the name of a comic book villain, a gigantic cloud of fear. The following piece is an homage to both science and pop culture, a tribute to enormous amorphous antagonists. These villains take many forms, materializing from wisps of smoke and sublimating into thin air. Yet even when they appear to be absent, they are always lurking.

David and Goliath (2023)

Instrumentation: String Orchestra

Duration: 5 minutes

Program Notes: David and Goliath is a musical depiction of the original underdog story, an exceptional tale referenced by both Christianity and popular culture. When King Saul and his army cower at the sight of the Goliath, a shepherd boy named David rises to the challenge. Thin, light textures are pitted against dramatic musical gestures, portraying the battle between the giant and our unlikely hero. Eventually, David’s modest motif becomes the mightiest of all as our protagonist overpowers Goliath and vanquishes the villain.
